| The Foothills Equestrian Trails Association (FETA) is dedicated to the preservation of the historic equestrian trail system in and around Hunting Country in Polk County, North Carolina. Many of these trails date back to the 1920's, when people began coming to Tryon from all over the country to fox hunt and enjoy the beautiful area and sporting life. Many of the trails are even older back roads used by the western settlers probably following routes first used by the Native Americans. |

| Pacolet River Byway (http://www.bywaysonline.org/byways/12835/) |
 |
| The Pacolet River Byway begins at the South Carolina state line and traces its way through the Tryon Thermal Belt, an area with an unusual climate that is usually free from dew or frost. The route crosses the Pacolet River several times and runs parallel with the Saluda Grade, the steepest mainline railroad grade in the United States. Old railroad depots, log cabins and other historic buildings can be found in the towns of Saluda and Tryon, while Pearson Falls Natural Heritage Site is a 259 acre botanical wonderland where visitors can hike, bird watch or just enjoy the outdoors. Tryon houses the Polk County Historical Museum, whose 1906 train station was once the center of activity for the area. |

| Skunkawauken Falls (http://www.alleneasler.com/shunk.html) |
 |
| Shunkawauken Falls are nearly one continuous cascade from the summit of Columbus, North Carolina's White Oak Mountain to its base. The upper portion is visible after a white-knuckle drive up the hairpin White Oak Mountain Road. Formerly known as Horse Creek Falls, the name was changed in 1891 in honor of an Indian chief. During my visit, I passed a bicyclist climbing up White Oak Mountain Road. He passed me at the pull-off a short time later, made it to the summit and then flew back down the mountain. Drive the road, then you'll know why I'm impressed. The top photo is the lower portion of the upper cascade. The bottom photo is a glimpse of the lower cascade through the woods. |
